Text description provided by the architects. A project for 163 dwellings and shops in the expansion area of Sagunto. The area has a low density and building heights are limited to 3 levels, except for two sites that make up the connection to the historical city center through a pedestrian bridge over Palencia river. The main problem we had to overcome was high density, and the large number of homes requested by the developer, which inevitably requires a perimeter large enough to allow natural light into every room.
As it was also important to supply a commercial area and design a large public area with a pool, we decided to create three blocks, one longitudinal to block off the north and the prevailing winds, and two partially elevated towers to have more relationship space. As a main material for enclosures we chose exposed brick in two colors, corresponding to different volumes, the lighter one in static areas and the darker one in the more dynamic areas.
As the housing program was quite varied; two, three and four bedroom apartments plus duplex homes, needing openings on a range of facades, we decided to group this variation in small areas, with terraces, where the variety of colors chosen is imposed on the range of the openings, creating a compensated puzzle in the view from afar. The reality of the whole complex as entrance building allowed this decision, unthinkable in another urban context.
